A Hundred Scenes of Awajima is really interested in showing the emotional conflict between the students of Awajima school in the most beautiful way possible. Yes, conflicts here are emotional. Subtle, but not unseen. Their rivalry was not depicted by punches or screams. Instead, it was represented by colour, filter, visual effect, and music.

And this is great. It makes the conflicts in A Hundred Scenes of Awajima feel angsty but still elegant. After all, the students of Awajima are still teenagers with a big dream: to be the stars of Awajima theatre. Because of this, they are conflicted. Their closest friend could end up being their rival. Kinue’s flashback scene really nailed this. Both Kinue’s and Ryouko’s emotions are overflowing. Happiness and insecurity clashed, creating a visual poetry inside the frame.

Personally, I think this is one of the best-directed anime this season. The story reminds me of Kageki Shoujo, but A Hundred Scenes of Awajima is more expressive with its visual language. From the synopsis, I expect the story will focus on multiple characters, so I’m interested in how the anime will explore the other characters’ headspace.

A Hundred Scenes of Awajima is currently streaming on Crunchyroll and Ani-One Asia.
