Synopsis
At the young age of 15, Elaina has became a witch, the highest rank for a mage. Inspired by the tales of the witch Nikeh’s journey that she loved to read when she was little, Elaina sets off on her own journey across the world and meets all kinds of people.

Despite the title, the first episode does not really feature much journeying. That is because this adaptation takes a chronological approach, starting from the story of why and how Elaina becomes a witch before she starts her journey. It is unlike the novel and the manga, and also unlike adaptations of some other journey-themed works like Kino’s Journey, that opens with the main characters already on the journey, going back to how they start it in some later stories. Perhaps by beginning with Elaina’s motivation, the values her teacher imparts her, and the promises she make to her parents, the anime provides the viewers with more context to understand how Elaina would act later in her journeys. But nevertheless, that means viewers would have to wait until later episodes to see Elaina actually wandering to places.
The anime depicts the world with lavish, detailed backgrounds and lush colours, setting a good precedent for the places that Elaina would visit later. A duel between Elaina and her teacher Fran also boasts a spectacle of effect animation; but hopefully, the anime wouldn’t just reduce the magic charm of the story into just hurling fireballs and thunderbolts.
