On Monday (23/2), on the closing day of the EVANGELION:30+; 30th ANNIVERSARY OF EVANGELION festival, the production committee officially announced that a new Evangelion project is currently in development, with a significant shift in its core creative team.
For the first time in the series’ history, Hideaki Anno is not listed as director or scriptwriter. The creative leadership has instead been entrusted to video game creator Yoko Taro.
In this new series, Yoko Taro is appointed as the series composition and scriptwriter. He is best known as the creator behind the popular video game series NieR and Drakengard, the games widely known for their philosophical themes, bleak storytelling, and frequent breaking of the fourth wall.
In a further announcement, NieR music composer Keiichi Okabe is also confirmed as the composer in this new Evangelion project. In addition, the project will be co-produced by Studio Khara and CloverWorks.
Directed by Hideaki Anno, the original Neon Genesis Evangelion is a Japanese anime television series produced by Gainax and Tatsunoko Production. The story follows Shinji Ikari, a teenage boy who is recruited by the mysterious organisation called Nerv to become the pilot of Evangelion, a giant biomechanical mecha, to fight and destroy beings known as Angels.
Originally, the series was broadcast on TV Tokyo and its affiliates from October 1995 to March 1996. The series later spawned into various films and mixed media projects, including 7 theatrical films, manga series, and video games.
