Synopsis
Karen Kohiruimaki was a collage student who is not confident in interacting with others because of having a tall body. Hence, in the game Gun Gale Online she made a character named Llenn with a short body. She then got invited by another player named Pitohui to participate in a battle royale tournament called Squad Jam that is only held on Japanese servers. Together with her mate, M who is a sniper, they tried to be the last to survive by beating more than 20 other teams in the same arena.

The one thing I love about Sword Art Online is how this series is able to tap into trends in the gaming world, such as virtual reality technology (though the VR tech in the real world wont be as sophisticated as NerveGear) and location-based augmented reality games in Ordinal Scale film. With this Alternative Gun Gale Online spin-off, it taps into the phenomenon of Battle Royale Shooter (though the novel has been written long before this game genre began to boom).
Then, what happens when an SAO series comes without Kirito, Asuna, and co.? Alternative GGO anime presents the universe of one of its game worlds, Gun Gale Online, through its main characters, Llenn, and through Squad Jam tournament. This episode manages to present an exciting firefight (as well as a few details that can satisfy military otaku) with a distinctive sensation like playing real Battle Royale games. It feels so interesting to see the duet of M (a calculating and patient sniper) and Llenn (an agile player with “P90 RUSH B” spirit) who have the opposite characteristics having good chemistry in this episode.
Overall, if you are a big fan of SAO series, battle royale gamer, or who needs action anime, Sword Art Online: Alternative Gun Gale Online can be your choice this spring.
