Synopsis
Luna is a black witch who lives in the forest. Her body has a peculiar condition of converting ambient negativity into poisonous mushrooms, but it also makes her body poisonous to normal humans. Because of that and the persecution of black witches and black wizards by the white witches that rule the kingdom, the townsfolk avoid her like the plague. Still, she feels content with discreetly supplying potions to the town that helps people with their ailments, while getting enough money to buy the books she could immerse herself into. But Luna is about to have a fateful encounter that would change her life.

Fantasy anime that borrow fantasy RPG elements are quite common these days (and not just the isekai ones—a series like Frieren too, is fundamentally game-inspired), but there are other approaches to doing a fantasy series too. The field of shoujo manga, for instance, is no stranger to more fairytale-like fantasy, and this season’s Champignon Witch anime is an adaptation of one of that kind of manga, from the already renowned creator of Alice Academy, Tachibana Higuchi.
The presence of a narrator in each episode is one of the aspects that give it a fairytale-like feel. But you can also observe how magic here is depicted not through game mechanic kind of logic. Luna’s magic, rather, affects her surroundings in curious dreamlike ways—mushrooms sprout from her steps, flowers bloom on her hat when she’s flustered, drawings may arise for a dance beneath the moonlight. Along with the flock of magical creatures that accompany her and the multitudes of quirky mushrooms around her, the story’s world view has an enchanting feel. And the adaptation does a decent work to bring that world view to life on the screen for the viewers to immerse in it, like how Luna immerses herself in her books by animating their illustrations to life.
True to its fairytale-like quality, it’s not just a dreamy world view, but also has darker elements woven to it. The tragic outcome of her romantic adventure in the first story arc demonstrates how the condition of her body that she has learned to live with can still cause pain. The shadow of conflict between the ruling white witches and the persecuted black witches and wizards also looms over her, as pointed out at various points in the debut episodes. With the anime launching with the first two episodes released together, it shouldn’t be too long for the anime to get parts of that plot into Luna’s story. But still, the most interesting thing is to see what other curious wonders does the magical world still have in store beyond the hardships that it may bring.
