Kyoto Animation has officially announced an animated film adaptation of John Tarachine‘s manga Umi ga Hashiru End Roll. The film is scheduled for release in 2027, with Taichi Ishidate (Violet Evergarden, City The Animation) directing the project.
Umi ga Hashiru End Roll follows Umiko Chino, a 65-year-old widow with little interest in hobbies or creative pursuits. After her VCR stops working, she visits a cinema for the first time in years, recalling memories of going there with her late husband.
During the screening, her attention becomes drawn not to the film itself, but to another audience member, a young film student named Kai Hamauchi. Following the screening, Kai helps repair Umiko’s VCR, but their encounter soon leads to a life-changing question when he asks whether she would like to make a film together.
The manga was serialised in Akita Shoten’s Mystery Bonita magazine from October 2020 to November 2025. It was nominated for the 15th Manga Taisho Awards in 2022, and also ranked first and sixth in the 2022 and 2023 Kono Manga ga Sugoi rankings, respectively, for the Female Readers category
