Produced as a mixed media project to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Aniplex, The Girl in Twilight‘s story seems to focus on the theme of parallel world and the idea of meeting your other self that undergoes a different experience. The story idea itself is actually based on a concept from Kotaro Uchikoshi, a game designer famous for creating the Zero Escape franchise and the Punchline anime. All of his works are well known for idiosyncratic story structures, using branching narrative and multiple endings to build mysteries and conflicts.
In the first episode, it feels that The Girl in Twilight will be more focused on its mystery with action aspect. There are some mysteries surrounding Asuka from the parallel world which could elicite viewers’ curiousity. The fighting aspect is also executed quite well, mostly using CGs in battle scenes. Another unique aspect of this anime is that the character uses a Sony Walkman to transform, an item fitting for Asuka because of her position as aa radi club member. If you are interested in a mystery of a parallel world, or maybe interested for another anime that based by Uchikoshi’s concept, this anime is worth try.
