The National Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia (BRIN) has launched GANA (Game Asset Nusantara), a digital library of game assets themed around Indonesian culture. The project’s prototype is unveiled on 4 August 2025 through BRIN’s official X (formerly Twitter) account.
Available via gana-prototype.brin.go.id, GANA offers a growing collection of assets inspired by Indonesian culture, like traditional houses, clothing, and weapons. The developers can use these assets freely to enrich their projects with local content. The initiative is also to encourage Indonesian game developers to create more Indonesian cultural content in their games.
However, the announcement has sparked controversy among online users. Concerns have been raised about the lack of strict screening for generative AI assets, with users questioning the licensing legitimacy of the uploaded materials. Some commentators suggested that BRIN should actively involve local artists and creators to ensure cultural authenticity and better quality control.
The announcement post has received more than 50 comments and 100 reposts on X, with reactions ranging from cautious optimism to sharp criticism of the platform’s reliance on AI.
As the GANA project continues to evolve, it remains to be seen whether BRIN will address these concerns and collaborate more closely with the Indonesian creative community.
