Based on a comic character by Hans Jaladara, the original story of the Panji Tengkorak comic tells the tale of Panji, a master in the dark arts of silat (an Indonesian martial art), who seeks the person responsible for killing his wife. In his journey, Panji always disguises himself as a beggar and wears a skull mask.
The comic was originally published by Dwi Djaja Djakarta Publisher in 1968. It has been remade twice. The first one was in 1985 by UP Pradisha, and later in 1996 by Elex Media Komputindo.

Panji Tengkorak has also been adapted into live-action several times, including two movies in 1971 and 1983, and a TV series in 1996, which aired on Indosiar. In 2016, it was reported that a new live-action film was also being planned with Anggy Umbara as the director and Bounty Umbara as the scriptwriter.
