Bandung-based game developer StoryTale Studios has unveiled the latest game from their Pamali series, Pamali: The Vengeful Mother. In this new instalment, StoryTale studio focused on the myth of Wewe Gombel, a vengeful mother from Indonesian ghost folklore.
The Pamali game series centred on a traditional societal norm mainly in Sundanese people (an ethnic group in Indonesia) called pamali, which means taboo. This term is used to refer to something that is prohibited and mustn’t be done, or it will jinx the person who disobeyed it. The game’s objective is to explore the area and unveil the story without violating any taboos. The player has to be careful because when a taboo is violated, bad things will happen to the player.
The latest instalment Pamali: The Vengeful Mother, tells the story of a mother who returns from the dead, fuelled by unresolved vengeance. The game challenges players’ courage with various choices that influence the storyline. Whether the player investigates clues or ignores ominous warnings, each decision has consequences. The player must explore the story carefully as every action can influence the game’s outcome.
This latest game will also feature a co-op mode supporting 1 to 4 players. Players can select from four unique characters, each with specialised abilities: one can see spirits, another has great strength, a third excels in speed, and the last is skilled in technology. These characters are trapped in an old house rumoured to be the lair of Wewe Gombel, a ghost infamous for abducting children. The objective is to rescue the trapped children and escape the cursed house. However, caution is key, as every decision players make has its own set of consequences.
Wewe Gombel is the fifth Indonesian ghost folklore explored in the series. The other ghosts folklore were kuntilanak, pocong, tuyul, and leak. While a specific release date has yet to be announced, Pamali: The Vengeful Mother game page is already available on Steam and can be wishlisted.
