Which Route to Choose?

The developer studio known for Super Robot Wars (previously-named B.B. Studio, previously also known as Banpresto, now known as Bandai Namco Forge Digitals) has a long history, and has pretty much been the main caretaker and driving force of the series. But with the many recent developments over the years, such as the name change, the success of mobile titles such as Super Robot Wars X-Ω & Super Robot Wars DD. longtime producer Takanobu Terada stepping away from a production role, the global push, the inclusion of series like Fuuto PI and ULTRAMAN, and the move away from “SD”-style robot proportions and hand-drawn sprites to more realistic proportions and sprites made using 3D models, Y does feel like the long-running series is at a crossroads on where it heads next. (Quite fitting considering Y‘s themes of choosing between two possible futures.)

As a longtime fan, I’m cautiously optimistic that all the choices being made so far seem to be made in the service of ensuring that the series can continue in the long run. Rebuilding the game system in Unity seemingly without major changes, and in a way that enables the reuse of resources, reminds me of RGG Studio‘s Like a Dragon games where the usage of their proprietary Dragon Engine enables them to build on each new installment using both old and new assets, ensuring sustainability, and that newer entries can come out quicker but still delivering on a satisfying product.

But at the same time, we can see how not much really changed between the past four instalments and Y despite the opportunity to rebuild the system. I’m worried the future games will be less likely to take big swings with their gameplay & presentation. While that won’t be a dealbreaker, I’m worried about the possibility of new instalments only being the same old meal for the same full price, just with different toppings and leftovers being reused- for lack of a better description. Especially when just the new CGs being added add so much to the presentation of the story. At the very least, if they take this route, I hope they’ll implement regional pricing for a fairer price and have the DLC Expansion Packs be available on release for future games.

Regardless, Super Robot Wars Y is still very much worth your time if you enjoy any one of the anime series involved, and I’m looking forward to what path the series takes for its next instalment. And as you play, remember: it’s not over until JAM Project sings.
