Based on a web novel by Natsu Hyuuga, The Apothecary Diaries is set in a fictional kingdom based on imperial China. It tells the story of Maomao, a maid who works in the imperial palace. Due to her vast knowledge of poison and medicine, she was quickly promoted to become the food tester of the emperor’s favourite concubine, Lady Gyokuyou. While serving Lady Gyokuyou, she was also involved in various cases that happened inside the harem.

The web novel was first published in the Japanese web novel platform Shosetsuka ni Narou. Later, the web novel is adapted into two light novel versions which are illustrated by two different artists, Touko Shino and Megumi Matsuda. The web novel is also adapted into two manga adaptations that follow the same story but are illustrated by two different artists, Nekokurage and Minoji Kurata. Both versions of the manga have been published in Indonesia.
